The technology news website Re/code, led by Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, which is also a frequent contributor to Here & Now, has announced that it is being acquired by Vox Media.
The all-stock deal is believed to bolster Re/code’s readership, something it has struggled with since splitting with The Wall Street Journal more than a year ago.
Re/code’s leadership says it will continue to publish under the same name and with editorial independence, but much of the deal, including the financial details, have yet to be revealed.
Here & Now host Jeremy Hobson spoke with Swisher about the deal and why she and Mossberg decided to sell.
“When we started, we had these great investors, NBC and Windsor Media, and we raised quite a bit of money,” Swisher explained. “But during the past year, there’s been an enormous influx of capital into the content area at Buzzfeed, at Vox, at Business Insider, and we had to look at where things were going and how you attract audiences, and we felt that if we linked with a larger – I call it a media ocean liner – we’d have a lot better chance at taking the brand we’ve already built, which is also substantive, and really taking it to the next level.”
