Meet Peter Biello, NHPR's New 'All Things Considered' Host

Meet Peter Biello, the new voice of NHPR's "All Things Considered." Peter comes to NHPR from Vermont Public Radio, where he worked as a producer and announcer. Before working at VPR, Peter was Morning Edition host at WHQR in Wilmington, N.C.

If you're worried about missing Brady Carlson, don't fret! Brady has taken on a new role at NHPR; he'll be reporting on business and the economy for NHPR News and will host Weekend Edition on NHPR.

Just in case you're not sure who's who, that's Peter on the left.

As Brady prepares to hand over the ATC baton, we've asked Peter to answer a few questions so you can get to know him. If you have your own questions for Peter, leave a comment on our Facebook page, or send Peter a tweet - you can find him on Twitter @PeterBiello.

Q: Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts, which also happens to be where regular NPR political commentator E.J. Dionne grew up. Unfortunately, we were not there at the same time.

Q: What attracted you to New Hampshire?

I’ve lived in Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine, so New Hampshire has always been this place that I’ve driven through on the way to somewhere else. I’m attracted to it because it seems very different from the other New England states politically and culturally.

Q:What’s your favorite thing about working in public radio?

It’s hard to name just one thing. I love being on the air and talking to folks, and I love when listeners respond to what’s happening on the air. I also love how radio offers reporters the opportunity to share with the world more than just the words of the source. The source’s voice and tone matter. I love capturing and serving up audio that puts on display a real human being. It’s also fun to find sound-rich stories and paint a picture for a listener.

Q: What are your interests outside of work?

I’m a fiction writer and I enjoy working on and sending out pieces of short fiction. I started a public writing workshop in Vermont called the Burlington Writers Workshop, and I’m interested in serving as an advisor to the new leaders. I also like cooking and my girlfriend and I occasionally brew small batches of beer together.

Q: Who are your favorite public radio personalities?

Scott Simon is my favorite radio host. He’s got such a casual, personal presence on the air. His interview questions are spot-on, and the way he handles tough questions on delicate subjects is respectful and fair. I’m thinking specifically of his recent interview with Bill Cosby. Plus, he’s a novelist, so his approach to his life as a host/writer is something I’m trying to emulate.

Q: What are you most excited to do in your new role as NHPR’sATC host?

This is another tough question to answer, because I’m excited about so much! I’m interested in finding and producing stories about veterans, politicians and the Presidential Primary, food, literature (if you’re publishing a book soon, drop me a line), and anything that presents an opportunity to create a sound-rich interview or story.
