Modern Dance Comes to Keene

Marc Pilaro

It’s tough to find a venue in New Hampshire to view modern dance.  While “Nutcrackers” abound at the holidays and international dance troupes turn up at the big theatres, modern dance is a far more elusive creature.

The Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College brings an end to the dance drought with its March 30th presentation of the Doppelganger Dance Collective (DCC).  This is a duet project founded by dancers Shura Baryshnikov and Danielle Davidson.  The mission of DCC is: “To perform original, contemporary, choreographic work for duet performance.”  Baryshnikov and Davidson commission new works each season by nationally renowned choreographers and engage live musicians.

Davidson is on faculty at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and continues to perform regularly with project-based companies in New England and beyond. She is in her third season with Prometheus Dance, a dance-theater company based in Massachusetts. Baryshnikov is an interdisciplinary dance and theatre artist working in New York, Providence, and Boston and is also a movement instructor in the Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies at Brown University,

The Doppleganger Dance Cooperative will make their Keene debut with two world premieres as well as recent work from their repertory.  The 7:30 p.m. performance will be followed by a post-show reception and discussion with Baryshnikov and Davidson.
