BLOCK: At the National Cathedral here in Washington, D.C. today, a vigil for victims of gun violence.
(SOUNDBITE OF CHOIR SINGING)
BLOCK: People gathered to remember the estimated 30,000 gun deaths in this country each year.
CORNISH: This week is the anniversary of the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty children and six adults were killed in the attack, and the shooting sparked a national call for action. This week, we're reporting on what has happened since. We'll explore some of this year's numbers in a moment.
BLOCK: Today, inside the church that towers over the nation's capital, prayers were said and hymns sung, along with this musical meditation.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "IMAGINE")
CORNISH: Family members talked of their experiences. Tom Sullivan lost his son in last year's movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado.
TOM SULLIVAN: As days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months and now a year has passed, I will always remember the pride I felt in being known to one and all as Alex's dad. I will remember.
BLOCK: And each family member who spoke, the audience responded.
