The annual Clean Tech Leadership Index measures and ranks states on a range of indicators, such as renewable energy generation, green buildings and transportation.

New Hampshire ranks twelfth overall on the 2015 index, up four places from last year. Ron Pernick of CleanEdge, which produces the annual report, says the state excels in several areas.

“Number seven in the nation for hybrid vehicle deployment, number eight in electricity consumption per capita, so you’re more energy efficient than many other states, and number 10 in both Energy Star buildings and smart meter penetration.”

Pernick says in addition to making strides in efficiency, New Hampshire and other New England states have been generating more electricity from renewable sources.

The index ranked Massachusetts second among states, with Vermont sixth and Maine 22nd.
