New Hampshire's Attorney General Resigns

Jack Rodolico for NHPR

New Hampshire Attorney General Joe Foster will step down at month's end after four years leading the state's justice department.

In his resignation letter to the Executive Council Foster called his time as A.G. "an extraordinary honor."

Governor Chris Sununu says he expects to name his pick to replace Foster shortly.

"The sooner the better. I mean I can't give you an exact time table, but we are working very diligently through the process now. We are not going to wait."

Under Foster, the justice department has made drugs a focus. Overdoses are now treated as crime scene, and people who provided drugs involved in overdose deaths are facing stiffer penalties.

The A.G.'s office has also been going after drug manufacturers for improper marketing of Opioid painkillers.

Former Governor Maggie Hassan nominated Foster, whose legal specialty is bankruptcy law, to be Attorney General. Foster and Hassan had served together in the state senate.

I cover campaigns, elections, and government for NHPR. Stories that attract me often explore New Hampshire’s highly participatory political culture. I am interested in how ideologies – doctrinal and applied – shape our politics. I like to learn how voters make their decisions and explore how candidates and campaigns work to persuade them.
