N.H. Court Hears Challenge To Voter Registration Law

A Strafford County judge is hearing from advocacy groups suing the state over a new law that effectively blocks out-of-state students from voting in New Hampshire.

The law requires people registering to vote to sign a statement saying they declare New Hampshire their domicile and are subject to laws that apply to all residents, including auto registration and licensing laws. Opponents argue the law will have a chilling effect on college students, who in the past could make New Hampshire their domicile for voting purposes while maintaining their car registrations in other states.

The state chapters of the League of Women Voters and the American Civil Liberties Union filed a petition this month on behalf of four students seeking to block the law. A hearing is set for Wednesday afternoon.
