A Senate Committee has recommended killinga bill passed by the House of Representatives that would make it easier to challenge voters at the polls.
The bill would have dropped a requirement that anyone who challenges someone else’s right to vote must submit their reason for challenging in writing. Its backers said it was an unnecessary step.
But a senate committee heard from a chorus of opponents who said the measure might lead to chaos at the polls, as one individual could challenge voter after voter without filing any paperwork.
Republican Representative Jim Belanger says he isn’t sure how this bill made it through the House
"I equate this to a police officer stopping you for speeding but not having to write up a summons: sound reasonable?
The legislation’s sponsors didn’t show up to testify and the committee voted unanimously to kill the bill.
