Record $2.25 Million In Grants Awarded To North Country

The New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority has awarded grants to three North Country towns – Stewartstown, Errol and Pittsburg – as well as Coos County and the city of Berlin.

And, the total of $2 and one-quarter million dollars is the most the North Country has received since the program began roughly thirty years ago, says Kevin Flynn, an official with the agency.

The money will go for work including repairs to water systems and low-income housing.

The grant money comes from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Here’s how the funds will be used:

•  Stewartstown will get $250,000 for water and drainage repairs to the Northern View Apartments. The work will improve drainage issues which have caused coliform contamination in the building’s water supply.

•   Errol will get $500,000 for improvements to the town’s water system including new water mains, well pump controls and improved sanitation systems.

•   Coos County will get $500,000 toward creating 13 affordable housing units at the abandoned Bartlett School.

•  Berlin will get $500,000 to support its Neighborhood Revitalization program which as so far rehabilitated 65 housing units in blighted areas.

•  Pittsburg will get $500,000 for a water system upgrade.

The block grant awards must still be approved by the Executive Council.
