SEA-3 Opponents Will Testify At Final Propane Project Hearing

SEA-3's existing propane terminal in Newington would be expanded to accommodate propane shipments by rail from extraction sites in the American West. The propane would then be distributed domestically by truck, and exported by cargo vessel.

Two cities and eleven individuals will have the chance to weigh in on propane company SEA-3’s controversial project in Newington.

The state’s Site Evaluation Committee is in the middle of evaluating whether to approve SEA-3’s request to expand. SEC evaluations can take up to a year, and SEA-3 has requested an exemption to speed it up.

At a public hearing on Thursday, the SEC decided to allow the cities of Portsmouth and Dover; a group of ten Portsmouth residents and one Greenland resident to testify at the final exemption hearing. Council to the committee, Mike Iacopino says they will be able to "present testimony, cross examine, and make arguments to the committee."

The town of Newington and the company SEA-3 say the region’s propane supply is at stake, while local opponents argue the transportation of propane poses safety and environmental risks.
