The state Senate has again rejected a proposal to repeal New Hampshire’s death penalty.
The first House proposal to repeal the law stalled in the Senate a month ago on a 12-12 vote.
And on a voice vote this morning, the Senate killed a second proposal from the House, which was attached as an amendment to a Senate bill.
Republican Senator Jeb Bradley said it’s time to move on.
“I would urge that we non-concur because we’ve had the debate already. We deadlocked on that debate several weeks ago.”
House lawmakers in support of repeal urged the Senate to reconsider, in light of a recent botched lethal injection execution in Oklahoma.
Governor Maggie Hassan has expressed her support for repeal, with the condition that it doesn’t affect the sentence of the state’s lone death row inmate, Michael Addison.
An appeal of Addison’s sentence is before the state Supreme Court.
If upheld, he would be the first person executed in the state since 1939.
