Solar Project Proposed for Superfund Site in Londonderry

file

A solar power developer wants to install an array on a sealed-off Superfund site in Londonderry. It’s one of the largest solar projects currently in the works in the state.

The so-called Superfund Solar project would sit atop the Auburn Road Landfill site,a federal toxic waste area that was capped in the 1990s.

Londonderry Town Manager Kevin Smith says the solar panels will generate $6 million in tax and lease revenue for the community using land that's been going to waste.

“I don’t think it’s a new idea, but it’s just a good re-purposing of the site,” Smith says.

Developer Granite Apollo will spend the next several months finding a buyer for its planned 10 megawatts of solar, which it says is enough to power about 2500 homes.

Smith says Londonderry might buy a little of the energy to save on power at municipal buildings.
