Special Election Will Be Needed To Fill Burton's Executive Council Seat

Governor Maggie Hassan will need to call a special election to fill the District 1 Executive Council seat left vacant following the death of Ray Burton.

Deputy Secretary of State David Scanlan says state law dictates the governor has until November 21 to call for the election.

“The conventional wisdom is that a special election would be scheduled on the day of the March town meeting when most towns in the state are already conducting an election.”

Town meeting falls on March 11 next year.

If that’s the case, a primary would be held January 21.

However, if only one candidate from each party files and no primary is necessary, the election moves to January 21.

Burton passed away Tuesday, after recently announcing that his kidney cancer had returned.

He represented the North Country as executive councilor for more than three decades.

He also served as a Grafton County commissioner.
