The Attorney General's office says an autopsy of the man who died after an altercation with state police on Tuesday shows he was shot three times, twice in the torso and once in his left shoulder. His death has been ruled a homicide.

A Portsmouth resident is dead after an altercation with New Hampshire State Troopers outside a state liquor store in Hampton.
Speaking to reporters from the steps of the Hampton Police Department Tuesday evening, Attorney General Gordon MacDonald offered the first details of the shooting that happened earlier that afternoon.
According to police reports, 36 year-old Barry Jones of Portsmouth was intoxicated when he stole his neighbor’s truck and threatened an individual with a handgun. He then allegedly drove the stolen vehicle to the New Hampshire state liquor store on I-95 South in Hampton. The police reports indicate that Jones’ ultimate destination was Lawrence, Massachusetts where he hoped to get drugs.
“Shortly after 12:30pm there was an encounter between New Hampshire state troopers and Mr. Jones in front of the liquor store" said MacDonald, "where one or two of the troopers discharged their weapons.”
Jones was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police say no one else was hurt.
MacDonald says the exact circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
The officers involved have been placed on paid leave.
