The Senate has given its unanimous approval to legislation that's designed to make it easier for people to register to vote.
Currently, when a person applies for a Vermont driver's license they have the opportunity to register at the same time.
Under this bill, they will be registered automatically unless they choose to opt out. Chittenden Sen. David Zuckerman noted that Vermont is taking the action at a time when some other states are making it more difficult for people to vote.
"Here in Vermont, we can be very proud that people are encouraged to vote and participate and that we don't throw up roadblocks left and right," said Zuckerman.
The measure has already been approved by the House. Now House members will review the Senate bill and decide if any changes are needed.
