Wide Media Coverage Of Fabricated Study Begs The Question, How To Do It Better?

The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post, This American Life and many others were among the media organizations that covered the results of a recent study about gay marriage opinions that turned out to be fabricated.

The lead author of the study in the journal Science asked that it be retracted, after his co-author, a graduate student, failed to produce the raw data and admitted that some of the details were fabricated.

NPR Media Correspondent David Folkenflik joins Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson to break down the coverage of the study in Science and the subsequent fallout, after it was revealed that the results were made up. Folkenflik also talks about how media organizations might think about doing their coverage differently.
