Writers on a New England Stage: Chris Matthews

Chris Matthews is best known for his opinionated and combative style on his MSNBC program, "Hardball with Chris Matthews."

What's lesser known is that he's a former print journalist, was a long-time aide to Tip O'Neill, and that he grew up in an Irish Catholic family...of Republicans. All this played no small part in sewing the seeds of his admiration for a man he'd later write two books about, John F. Kennedy.

My Life is Your Life

Greta Garbo is best known throughout her storied career for her plea from the 1932 film Grand Hotel. She later left the spotlight and chose to live the rest of her life privately and anonymously – an exit considered freakish by the public and a press which shadowed her the rest of her life. Today, we know far more about everyday citizens who’s allure falls far short of Garbo’s.

Thanks to the popularity of the Mars rover, Curiosity, NASA is back in the public eye for something other than budget cuts or program terminations. The excitement and pride felt by many Americans over the rover’s successful landing, has NASA exploring ways to capitalize and build on this wave of public interest. Here at Word of Mouth, we receive dozens of unsolicited albums each week to be reviewed for potential segments on the show. So what, you may ask, enticed me to pop David Friedenberg's newest album into my computer and give it a good long listen? It may have been the letter enclosed in the CD case, addressed to Laura Knoy, that suggested she might find this new and "more political" album interesting.

The N.R.A. Lobby vs. The N.R.A. Members

Gun violence is an everyday occurrence in many cities in the united states, but after a tragedy like the Aurora  shootings or the Virginia Tech shootings, the gun control debate starts to make more noise on the socio-political landscape.  The second amendment typically divides parties and beliefs, but are gun control laws starting to divide the N.R.A itself? The National Rifle Association is a major player in keeping the Second Amendment exactly how it is for better or worse.

The Social Networks in Epic Poems

Long before the advent of Facebook and Myspace, societies shared news and were connected by networks;relationships represented in history’s most treasured mythologies.  Padraig Mac Carron is a graduate student at Coventry University in England, who authored a paper which examines and evaluates the social networks in some of the canon’s most famous – and not so famous -- epic poems.  Word of Mouth producer Taylor Quimby spoke with Padraig from his parent’s home in Ireland.

The Soundtrack to Our Lives...of Joblessness

Throughout the presidential campaign you’ll be hearing from unemployed auto workers in Michigan,out-of-work machinists in Ohio and maybe casino workers in Nevada will share stories of not being able to catch a break.  We don’t often hear from the office worker who’s company packs up and moves, leaving them jobless, with no place to go.  Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra wrote “No Place to Go", a show about the anxieties and driftlessnes
