Take A Picture of Your Birth...It Will Last Longer

Digital cameras are everywhere…documenting everything from mundane meals to cute things kids do. There are still a few high-stakes events that warrant the sticker price of a professional shutterbug: weddings of course, school portraits, and – for a new generation of open-minded Mommies and Daddies – births.

Last week, Governor John Lynch vetoed a bill to legalize medical marijuana in New Hampshire.  The bill originally passed the House and Senate with a veto-proof majority. An override vote is planned for tomorrow. While the issue is being hashed out in the Granite State, a new study on legalized pot has gone viral online.

Ideas from Gwarlingo

In January, a listener clued us into the fabulous arts blog, Gwarlingo . We invited its curator, Michelle Aldredge, to join us on the show and quickly figured out why Gwarlingo is such a delightful, beautifully-executed site. Back then it was Michelle’s side venture – since then, Michelle has quit her job and  taken Gwarlingo full-time, so she’s back to tell us how it’s going.

The Downside of Happiness

(Photo by Mike Fischer via Flickr Creative Commons)

The science behind our most-sought after emotional state has positively exploded in recent years – with psychologists and social scientists probing just about everything – income, gender, relationships, kids, chocolate – in an effort to find out what makes us more or less happy.   June Gruber is Assistant Professor of Psychology at Yale University, and Director of the Yale Positive Emotion and Psychopathology lab.

Are Op-Ed Pages Sexist?

(Photo by Rich Watts via Flickr Creative Commons)

With some notable exceptions of course, when you’re the local newspapers op-ed page, you’re liable to see a deliberate balance of material from both sides of the political aisle.  What you won’t see apparently, is a representative proportion of writers by gender… except for a few female dominated subjects, a surprising majority of op eds are written by men.

Who is Tim Scott?

(Photo of Tim in studio by Rebecca Lavoie)

Produced with Emma Ruddock

Here on Word of Mouth, we’re always trying to bring you the story, the angle, or the artist you’ve never heard… but because it takes buzz to make buzz, we rarely get to highlight the work of someone who’s work has yet to be discovered at all.  Last week our intern Emma Ruddock brought seventeen year-old singer-songwriter Tim Scott to our studio, and right away we recognized a rare talent in the shy high-schooler from Milford, New Hampshire.

Postcards From Nowhere - Revisited

Emma Ruddock

Produced with Emma Ruddock

In early May, Word of Mouth Brought you the story about Jake Jones and Andrew Kenney, two New York photographers who are traveling across the country by car. Fueled by their Kickstarter supporters, they are documenting their trip by sending postcards of their photography from each state to those who contributed funds. After receiving our first couple of postcards, Jake and Andrew stopped by our studio on their way through New Hampshire to give us an update on the status of their travels.
