Granito: How to Nail a Dictator

Pamela Yates was a young, idealistic filmmaker when she went to Guatemala in 1982 to make a documentary about a hidden war. 200,000 people were murdered in the Guatemalan conflict, many indigenous people living in the highlands. Pamela and her colleagues met guerilla fighters, and tagged along on army sweeps…she even interviewed then President of the Republic, General Efrain Rios Montt.

Yes, I really read all your email, Facebook posts, and tweets. Today, I get to talk about a few of them on the show.

Digital cameras are everywhere…documenting everything from mundane meals to cute things kids do. There are still a few high-stakes events that warrant the sticker price of a professional shutterbug: weddings of course, school portraits, and – for a new generation of open-minded Mommies and Daddies – births.

Ideas from Gwarlingo

We invited its curator, Michelle Aldredge, to join us on the show and quickly figured out why Gwarlingo is such a delightful, beautifully-executed site. Back then it was Michelle’s side venture – since then, Michelle has quit her job and  taken Gwarlingo full-time, so she’s back to tell us how it’s going.

Are Op-Ed Pages Sexist?

(Photo by Rich Watts via Flickr Creative Commons)

With some notable exceptions of course, when you’re the local newspapers op-ed page, you’re liable to see a deliberate balance of material from both sides of the political aisle.  What you won’t see apparently, is a representative proportion of writers by gender… except for a few female dominated subjects, a surprising majority of op eds are written by men.
