The Outsiders

By Shay Zeller on Wednesday, July 19, 2006.

S. E. Hinton wrote the "Outsiders" when she was just 16 years old. Her gritty tale of class division, violence and the true lives of teenagers marked a turning point in Young Adult literature. Tonight we deconstruct the book and look back at forty years of Ponyboy's legacy.

Tonight's Guests:

Best selling author Jodi Picoult will give us her impressions of the classic novel. Jodi wrote the forward to the new printing of The Outsiders.

We'll also hear from Michael Cart, professor of Young Adult Literature at UCLA and past president of the Young Adult Library Services Association.

And Kyle VanLeer will give us his impression of The Outsiders. Kyle is a student at Hanover High and -- not coincidentally -- Jodi Picoult's son. He read the book recently to help Jodi write the forward to the new edition.
