New Hampshire Newsmakers of the Year 2007

2007 was a year of victory for our primary and for same sex couples, a year of trouble for the state’s highway department and for the mill town of Groveton. It was a year when adequacy in public education was defined and Ed and Elaine Brown were captured. We look back at the biggest stories and forward to how they may play out in 2008.

Sox Fans (and Rox Fans) Are Ready For The World Series

As any good citizen of Red Sox nation knows, tonight is game one of the 2007 World Series against the Colorado Rockies.

The series pits East against West, and one of baseballs most storied franchises against a relative newcomer.

The two teams took very different roads to get to this game....and fans are predicting two very different styles on the way to winning four out of seven.

NHPR's Brady Carlson caught up with two of the ---dare we say millions of---baseball fans who plan to watch or listen to tonights game.....one from each side.

Baseball's "One-Hit Wonders"

The Red Sox wrap-up a three game series against their rival Yankees today. We'll check-in with sports writer Cecelia Tan, who's taking in the action at Yankee Stadium. We'll also hear some of the greatest baseball stories never told. Richard Letarte's new book looks at the careers of baseball players in the 1950s who only had one good season to brag about. His book is called That One Glorious Season: Baseball Players with One Spectacular Year.

The Red Sox - Yankee Rivalry

Chasing Buckner

Filmmaker Christoph Gelfand's new work explores the collective sorrow of Bill Buckner and the Red Sox' loss in the '86 world series. Gelfand combines that painful moment with his own dashed childhood dreams of victory on a playing field. The result is a philosophical journey about acceptance and forgiveness. We'll talk with Christoph about "Chasing Buckner" in advance of its premier this weekend at the New Hampshire Film Expo in Portsmouth.

Feeding the Monster

The Ins and Outs of the Baseball Draft

The white-knuckle season is over for hopeful baseball draftees, and six New Hampshire players are headed for the pros. We'll talk with a Franklin Pierce College grad who's swinging the bat for the Red Sox down in Lowell, and we'll find out how deep scouts go in determining the psychological make-up of a potential big leaguer.

The Red Sox, The Yankees, and the Physics of Baseball

The Boston Red Sox meet the New York Yankees for the first time this season tonight at Fenway Park. We talk with Cecilia Tan who's written books about both the Yankees and the Red Sox about the the state of the rivalry in May of 2006.

And, we talk with psychologist Kenneth Fuld who's connected human sensory perception to the physics of hitting and catching a baseball. He says that a lot of coaches get it wrong when they tell their players how to hit and catch. Dr. Fuld is chair of the Psychology Department a the University of New Hampshire.
