Next Big Pot of School Stimulus Money Announced

By Jon Greenberg on Friday, May 15, 2009.

The state has told schools districts how much they each get of the $29 million in federal stimulus under the Title One program. Title One is aimed at helping children from lower income households. To be eligible for any of this money, a district must have at least 10 children, ages 5 -17, in poverty and 5% of their total student population in poverty.

Some school districts such as Amherst and Bedford receive no Title One money. Manchester and Nashua recieve the largest amounts, $5.9 million and $2.8 million.

Schools Expecting Word on $31 million

The release of $30.9 million in Title One funds -- extra money for schools based on the fraction of lower-income students -- is tied up in something. The Department of Education decided about two weeks ago which school districts should receive how much. But what we hear from inside the department is that at the very least the governor's office has to sign off and maybe some representatives from the House and Senate too before the list can go public. Hard to say when that will happen. Maybe early next week.
