Richard Alan White is now long retired from his paying job--that as a security guard at Daniel Webster College. But the Manchester, New Hampshire-native is seeing his other career, that of music composer, finally gaining traction. White’s 900-page opera Hester is getting its debut Thursday in New York City.

Nashua lawmakers rejected a proposal on Tuesday to buy the former campus of Daniel Webster College off University Drive.

The city's aldermen voted on whether to spend up to $23 million to purchase the property, and use it for city administrative buildings, classrooms and a performing arts center.

Those against the purchase argued the property wasn’t feasible and cost too much. The measure failed 4 to 9. The campus has been for sale since the college shut its doors for financial reasons earlier this year.

Southern New Hampshire University will not be buying the 54-acre campus previously known as Daniel Webster College in Nashua.

The college announced this fall it was closing due to financial problems.

Daniel Webster College in Nashua has closed its doors for good.

The college held its final graduation ceremony earlier this month, as remaining students now transition to Southern New Hampshire University.

The college was once known for its flight program, but had a tumultuous final few years after being sold to the for-profit ITT Educational Services in 2009.

After a federal crackdown on student aid to for-profit colleges, ITT announced last year it was shutting down its campuses nationwide, leaving Daniel Webster College’s future up in the air.

Southern New Hampshire University has reached a deal with ITT Educational Services that will let students at Daniel Webster College in Nashua complete their degrees.

Under a “teach out” agreement, SNHU will take on all of the college’s 550 students, and says it will hire as many Daniel Webster College faculty members as possible.

Students with 90 or more credits will be able to earn a degree from Daniel Webster College this year, while all other students will be able to transition to SNHU programs.

With its parent company shutting down, the future of Daniel Webster College is uncertain.

ITT Educational Services purchased the Nashua college in 2009. The chain of for-profit colleges announced this week its more than 130 technical institutes across the country would close immediately.
