Newmarket GOP Chair Charged With Assault At Polls

A New Hampshire Republican town chairman is charged with assaulting an assistant attorney general who was monitoring the polls in Newmarket.

Foster's Daily Democrat quotes senior assistant attorney general Anne Edwards as saying her colleague was at the polling place Tuesday afternoon investigating a complaint involving Joe Barton, who is chairman of the Newmarket Republican Committee.

Police charged Barton with assaulting a police officer and disturbing the peace.

Edwards said the complaint involved Barton challenging voters on whether they are properly registered.

Granite Geek: Should The 'Ballot Selfie' Stay Illegal In New Hampshire?

Credit Allegra Boverman for NHPR

If you check your Facebook feed on this Election Day, there’s a chance you may see a friend post a “ballot selfie” - a photo taken in the voting booth of a completed ballot.

If that friend lives in New Hampshire, posting that photo might not be such a great idea. Such photos are illegal in this state – at least for now.

On Final Weekend Before The Election, Parties Rally And Look To Mobilize Support

If you are seeking nuance or restraint, you wont find it at a  get out the vote rally on the Sunday before a tight election.

Here’s State GOP chairman Jennifer Horn last night in Manchester:

"This is our time. We need to crush it. We need to grab it.  We need to run with it, push their heads under over and over again until they cannot breathe anymore, until the elections are over Tuesday night."

Normally watching TV means checking out a show with an occasional break or two for commercials. Watching TV these days feels more like watching large numbers of political ads with the occasional program thrown in.

And it looks like there will be many more to come.

Dave Levinthal is Senior Political Reporter for the Center For Public Integrity. He joined All Things Considered for another look at campaign ads and who’s paying for them.

Credit Allegra Boverman for NHPR

Democrat Maggie Hassan and Republican Walt Havenstein met in their second televised debate last night on WMUR TV.

Governor Hassan and former defense contractor Havenstein both pressed their cases energetically. They spoke at length about energy prices, which are on the rise this winter.

"The fact of the matter is for the last decade and certainly for the last two years, we’ve heard a lot of talk and zero action," said Havenstein.

Full Debate Audio: Havenstein Defend Records While Attacking Each Other's

Democrat Maggie Hassan and Republican Walt Havenstein faced off in their first televised debate Wednesday night on NH1.

Hassan and Havenstein agreed on one thing: those responsible for the riots in Keene should be held accountable.

After that, there was plenty of daylight between them. At times the two seemed to talk past one another, both defending their own records - and distorting their opponents.

Havenstein repeatedly accused Hassan of fomenting “toxic partisanship” in Concord. Hassan said Havenstein is misinformed.

In Debate, Hassan Attacks Havenstein For Signing Conservative Group's Pledge

In a debate Thursday morning on WGIR, Governor Maggie Hassan repeatedly went after Republican Walt Havenstein for a pledge he signed earlier this year with the conservative group Americans for Prosperity.

“By singing that Koch brothers pledge, he is pledging to undo our Medicaid expansion, he’s pledging no matter what to do what the Koch brothers and Americans for Prosperity tell him to do.”

Yusuf Valera resents that he has to buy health insurance. He’s never had it, and he says he doesn’t want it now.

"I don’t have much of a choice. If I don’t do it, then they’re going to take money out of my taxes anyway," Valera says.

The irony is Valera stands to gain - in a big way - from the Affordable Care Act. Yet like most New Hampshire residents, he simply doesn't like the law.

Florida U.S. Senator Marco Rubio was in New Hampshire Tuesday to endorse Republican Scott Brown in the race for U.S. Senate.

Speaking with Brown at an event in Derry that focused on foreign policy, Rubio says re-electing Democrat Jeanne Shaheen would be disastrous.

“Your current United State Senator, if she’s reelected, God forbid, the first vote she will take is to re-elect Harry Reid as the majority leader, someone who uses the United States Senate as a platform to run interference for the failed foreign policy of this president.”

Republican Scott Brown called on opponent Democrat Jeanne Shaheen to pull an ad he says misrepresents the so-called Women’s Right to Know bill he co-sponsored as a Massachusetts state senator.

The ad was controversial from the moment it began running.

For the Shaheen campaign, this ad is the sharpest effort yet in the race for U.S. Senate to undercut Scott Brown’s record on abortion rights.
