The defense has rested in the trial of Seth Mazzaglia, the 31 year old Dover man charged with raping and killing UNH student Lizzi Marriott.
Mazzaglia’s defense team rested after only two days, following 18 days of arguments from state prosecutors-- including extensive testimony by Mazzaglia’s 20-year-old ex-girlfriend, Kat McDonough. The defendant did not testify on his own behalf.
During the prosecution, the state argued Mazzaglia strangled Marriott. The defense countered that McDonough accidentally asphyxiated Marriott during sex.
The murder trial is set to begin for a New Hampshire man who police say raped and killed a 19-year-old college student then dumped her body in a river.
Thirty-one-year-old Seth Mazzaglia of Dover maintains that Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott died Oct. 9, 2012, during rough consensual sex. Marriott, of Westborough, Massachusetts, was a student at the University of New Hampshire and had been lured to Mazzaglia's apartment by his then-girlfriend, Kathryn McDonough.

Prosecutors say they now have a clearer picture of what happened to University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott, who has been missing and presumed dead last October.
Police arrested a man from Dover, Seth Mazzaglia, shortly after Marriott went missing, but it wasn’t until the last few days that a grand jury formally indicted Mazzaglia on a series of charges, including first and second degree murder.
Kathryn McDonough is a 19-year-old Portsmouth resident who has been arrested for giving a false alibi when questioned by the police as to her whereabouts at the time of the disappearance of UNH student Elizabeth Marriott.
A second arrest has been made in connection with disappearance and murder of UNH student Elizabeth Marriott. 19-year-old Portsmouth resident Kathryn McDonough has been arrested on charges of hindering apprehension or prosecution and conspiracy to hinder apprehension or prosecution.
Assistant Attorney General Peter Hinckley says McDonough was the girlfriend of Seth Mazzaglia who has been charged with Marriott’s murder.
The suspect charged in the death of UNH student Lizzi Marriott will be arraigned in Dover District court Monday.
At a press conference Saturday afternoon, authorities revealed they had information confirming the 19-year-old's death, but that they have yet to recover her body.
"This is still an active and ongoing investigation. We are, at this point only 24 hours in and, as you are aware, the search for her was ongoing for a period of about two days or so. But now, obviously, that has changed."
The family of a missing UNH student is offering a ten thousand dollar reward for information in her disappearance.
19-year-old Lizzie Marriott was last heard from by text message on Tuesday night. After class, she told a friend in Dover she was on her way there. Since then, investigators say, there has been no activity on her cell phone, credit cards or Facebook page.
The FBI, State Police, Chester Police, New Hampshire Fish and Game, and several volunteers continue to search for her.
