N.H. Remembers Pearl Harbor Attack

 In line with national tradition, Governor Maggie Hassan proclaimed Saturday "Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day'' to mark the 72nd commemoration of the attack that drew the United States into World War II.   Hassan  directed flags in the state to be flown at half-staff.   The attack by planes launched from Japanese aircraft carriers on Dec. 7, 1941, devastated the American naval fleet stationed at the Pearl Harbor base in Hawaii.       More than 2,000 members of the U.S. military died in the attack.

Harbor Homes Supports Homeless Vets

When Matt Milbourn, a veteran of the first Persian Gulf War, found himself unexpectedly made homeless,  Harbor Homes was there for him.

In addition to operating a homeless shelter, Harbor Homes also manages a reintegration program, offering services, healthcare, and education to homeless veterans and their families. Matt earned his CphT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) through the program, and now teaches computer education and life skills classes at Harbor Homes.

Andrew Bacevich's Breach Of Trust

In a new book, Bacevich claims that Americans have failed their soldiers and their country, by entering conflicts he calls “unwinnable”.   A U.S. Army veteran, Bacevich also examines the disconnect between those who fight the wars and the rest of the country.  He says national defense must return to idea of “We the People”.

The Contagiousness Of PTSD

We spoke with Mac McClelland about the spread of the invisible disorder that somewhere between 100 and 300-thousand veterans brought back from war …trauma. “Secondary traumatic stress” does not have its own entry in the DSM, and is often called compassion fatigue, a more euphemistic title. Sufferers experience PTSD symptoms, but are often faced with even more hurtles than veterans when seeking help. The important difference people see between the victims of PTSD and secondary traumatic stress is that the latter’s trauma was not originally their own. Mac McClelland wrote an article for Mother Jones’ about the phenomenon of secondary traumatic stress and its affect on the families of returned soldiers. She’s also working on a book about PTSD.
