That was the case when correspondent Sean Hurley ventured out to some familiar trails this past week:
Sun, 10 Feb 2013 23:00:00 +0000 Sean Hurley 26049 at http://nhpr.org A Walk In The Woods Outdoors Enthusiasts Out In The Storm http://nhpr.org/post/outdoors-enthusiasts-out-storm

It’s dark and the winds are really starting to bluster in Waterville Valley when Jess Chabot snowshoes out of the woods near Town Square.

I lived in NH for a long time. Growing up my parents didn’t ski or anything. I hated the snow. They hated the snow. I hated the snow. But then like in my mid-20’s I was like Why do I hate the snow so much I’m stuck with it. So, you just gotta get a hobby. Snowshoeing you don’t have to be good at at all. You just put em on your feet. If you can walk you can snow shoe.
Sat, 09 Feb 2013 15:30:00 +0000 Sean Hurley 26054 at http://nhpr.org Outdoors Enthusiasts Out In The Storm Snowshoe Racing: Winter's Leisure Sport Speeds Up http://nhpr.org/post/snowshoe-racing-winters-leisure-sport-speeds

The Sidehiller snowshoe race in Center Sandwich is the oldest snowshoe race in New Hampshire…a remarkable distinction for an event that began in 2005. Then I noticed the telephone poles. They were several feet back in the woods. Two of the poles had wheel hubs displaying just a hint of the yellow they were once painted. Solid Water http://nhpr.org/post/solid-water
You learned a remarkable property of H2O back in High School chemistry. Remember?

Normally, the density of compounds decreases as temperatures increase and molecules spread out. When temperatures fall, density increases as molecules become more tightly packed. Not true for ice – in fact, the exact opposite occurs!
Fri, 06 Jan 2012 05:00:00 +0000 Dave Anderson 1036 at http://nhpr.org Solid Water Winter Survival Strategies http://nhpr.org/post/winter-survival-strategies
For wildlife, it's time to display winter survival adaptations … or a lack thereof. What strategy will you choose? Your options to deal with winter are limited to five basic strategies:

#1) Die - Annual plants and many adult insects die-off, leaving offspring as seeds, eggs or larval caterpillars or aquatic nymphs. People avoid this strategy; too radical.

#2) Don't live here - Leave. Songbirds, hawks, waterfowl, several bats, monarch butterflies and resident human "snowbirds" migrate south to warmer climes.
Fri, 09 Dec 2011 05:00:00 +0000 Dave Anderson 766 at http://nhpr.org Winter Survival Strategies
