Aasif Mandvi talked to Virginia about his new collection of essays, No Land’s Man and about the time he got a call from The Daily Show to come in for an audition.
Mandvi, of course, did end up going to the audition, arriving exactly at the scheduled time. He met Jon Stewart and gave him his best impersonation of Stephen Colbert and was hired on the spot. Hours later he was taping his first segment without being able to call anyone to tell them about his new job. His family was confused.
From interviewing former North Carolina GOP precinct chair Don Yelton in an infamous segment, to having a discussion with a woman that delivered a fabricated statistic about the number of Muslims who were actually terrorists, Mandvi has often looked back on a conversation he had with the man he once impersonated.
Aasif Mandvi never planned on being a muck-raking gotcha journalist or even the author of a book, but he hascome a long way from boyhood days, dreaming of being a “Cool American”:
