On Demand: What's New To Netflix, Redbox, And Amazon Prime For September 2014

Picking out a movie can be a lot like browsing the cereal aisle - the more options you have, the harder it is to decide what to watch. It's especially difficult for subscription-based services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, which offer you more programming than you can even browse in one sitting. In our monthly segment "On Demand", we help make your movie nights memorable by offering our favorite movies and shows being made available this month.

Arguably the most recognizable hat in cinema history - after the fedora worn by Indiana Jones.

Crocodile Dundee (1986)

Just about the goofiest love story in Australian cinema history. Paul Hogan's Dundee was a surprise hit in the United States, becoming the second-highest grossing film of 1986. "Now THAT'S a knife." Available September 1st.

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

Robin Williams stars as a radio DJ working for the Armed Forces Radio Service during the Vietnam War. A role perfectly suited to his rapid-fire standup style, this is a must-see from the Williams canon.  Available September 1st.

School of Rock (2003)

It's back-to-school season, and who wouldn't want to be a part of Jack Black's unorthodox class for prep-school rockers? A good one to watch with the kids, especially if you're struggling to get them interested in guitar lessons. Available September 1st.

Your Sister's Sister (2011)

A low-budget comedy/drama that was well-received by critics, but failed to go beyond the indie and art-house audience. Starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt, and featuring public radio favorite Mike Birbiglia. Available September 5th.

Not for the faint of heart

Filth (2014)

James McAvoy stars as a corrupt, bigoted, and drug-addicted British police officer.  Brace yourself - the film (and the book it's adapted from) live up to the title - but for those who don't mind the filth, McAvoy offers up a fearless and frenetic performance. Available September 10th.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Remember when the world fell in love with Jennifer Lawrence? This comedic drama was much more than your average rom-com, and racked up a total of 8 Oscar nomination and 4 wins - including Best Picture. Available September 16th.

This picture pretty much summarizes the whole movie.

A Simple Plan (1998)

Money corrupts absolutely in this quiet thriller about a pair of brothers who find a suitcase full of cash.  A gem in director Sam Raimi's long and varied career, featuring powerful performances from Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton and a surprising amount of emotional depth given the all-too-familiar storyline. Available September 1st on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

All is Lost (2013)

Last year's Oscar-nominated survival film starring Robert Redford in a compelling one-man performance as a sailor lost at sea. Skip this one if you're a fan of witty dialogue - this short description has about as many words as the film's screenplay. Available September 5th on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Hugo (2011)

If you're sick of the dystopian sci-fi, take an innocent step backwards with this charming children's movie from 2011. Originally shot and released in 3D, streaming Hugo at home might not offer the same visual splendor you saw in theaters - but the sense of wonder the movie imparts should be just as captivating as it was the first time. Available September 1st on Amazon Prime.

Spaceballs (1987)

"May the schwartz be with you." Available September 8th on Amazon Prime.

You can tell it's the sequel because the Cap's shield is all banged up

They Came Together (2014)

Some critics dismissed this rom-com parody as being just as generic as the material it meant to satirize. On the other hand, you can't help but love Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. Available September 2nd.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Along with the first Iron Man and The Avengers, the Cap's second solo film is widely considered to be at the top of Marvel Studio's growing canon of superhero blockbusters.  Available September 9th.

Belle (2014)

This film, which was inspired by a true story (or more accurately, based loosely on speculation surrounding a real portrait painted in 1779) is about the illegitimate, mixed-race daughter of a Royal Navy officer, who was raised and educated alongside her cousin in the home of a wealthy aristocrat. Reviewers admit the story is probably a little too good to be entirely true, but the film received generally positive reviews nonetheless. Available September 23rd.
