Secretary of State Bill Gardner returned to New Hampshire Thursday after traveling to Washington earlier this week for his first meeting as a member of the Trump administration's election commission.
Gardner has been criticized locally for his decision to be a part of the commission, in light of the president's unfounded claims of voter fraud in New Hampshire and elsewhere.
But the secretary says people need to give the panel a chance to do its work before passing judgment.
"I think that I'd like to have people wait until this commission has a chance to get going,” Gardner said. “We just had the first face-to-face meeting, and it's all going to be an open process.”
Gardner said his travel to Washington wasn't paid for by the state or federal government, but he wouldn't elaborate when asked for more specifics.
