Four New Hampshire servicemen were honored posthumously with the New Hampshire Medal of Honor at the State House Friday. This was the second New Hampshire Medal of Honor Ceremony since it was created in 2007. The medal honors New Hampshire residents who died in the line of duty, going back to 1979.
Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte were in attendance. They each gave brief remarks before Governor Lynch presented the medals to the family members.
“So, I want to thank you for your sacrifice, thank you for being here today, and thank you for giving your loved one to protect all of us and to protect our liberties and our freedoms.”
One of the recipients was Nancy Geary of Derry. She was the mother of a fallen Marine, who was killed in action in Afghanistan two years ago. He died just six weeks before he was scheduled to return home. Geary says the medal does lend some small measure of comfort.
“Just so proud the country and our state recognizes the sacrifice he made and that the families have to endure…”
