Hampton Beach Visitors Could Be Subject To Fines For Littering, Drinking

Next summer, visitors to Hampton Beach could be fined for littering, illegally setting off fireworks, and consuming alcohol.

The state Division of Resources and Economic Development is proposing the changes.

The Portsmouth Heraldreports Amy Bassett of the division said it has had the authority to establish fines for some time. It's outlining penalties in hopes they will be enforceable by the next beach season.

Hampton police would dole out the fines and collect revenue.

Fines would be divided into three tiers. Tier 1 violations merit a $25 fine and $50 for subsequent offenses; Tier 2 is $50 and $100 for subsequent offenses; and Tier 3 is $100 and $250.

Tier 1 includes littering. Tier 2 includes illegally setting fireworks. Tier 3 includes drinking alcohol on the beach.
