Governor Maggie Hassan has issued an executive order barring discrimination in state government against transgender individuals.
The order issued Thursday bans such discrimination in state hiring as well as the administration of state programs and contracts with state government. The governor also directs state agencies to review polices to ensure they don't discriminate on the basis of gender identity or expression.
New Hampshire is the only New England state that does not explicitly bar such discrimination in state law.
The legislature last considered adding gender identity and expression to the state's anti-discrimination laws in 2009, but the measure failed in the Senate.
