A former St. Paul’s student who was convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old freshman is appealing to the state Supreme Court. Twenty-year-old Owen Labrie was sentenced in October to a year in county jail along with having to register as a sex offender for life.
During the trial Labrie testified that his sexual encounter with a fellow student was consensual and the two never had sex. But on the stand - the victim said Labrie forced himself on her and that he pursued her for months through Facebook and emails.
Labrie was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor but was acquitted of aggravated rape.
An appeal could take as long as two years to work its way through the court system. In the meantime, Labrie is under house arrest at his mother's home in Vermont.
