The Loneliness Epidemic

Diego Torres Silvestre; Flickr

Loneliness can have a powerful impact on our mental, physical, and social wellbeing. We look at what might be causing loneliness in children, teenagers, and adults, and what it means for our health and happiness.

GUESTS:

  • Jessica Lahey – Author of The Gift of Failure, a bestselling book about the benefits of allowing children to make mistakes. She has written for many publications, including The New York Times and the Atlantic.
  • Tim Lahey - Physician, researcher and ethicist at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, STAT and the Atlantic.

The Laheys cowrote "How Loneliness Wears on the Body" for the Atlantic in 2015.

Anew study from Cignafinds that loneliness has reached epidemic levels in America.

Other countries are also attempting to combat loneliness, including the U.K., which appointed a Minister for Loneliness this year.
