Proposal Would Charge ACA Legislative Committee With Overseeing Expanded Medicaid

Allegra Boverman for NHPR

A legislative committee overseeing implementation of the Affordable Care Act in New Hampshire may be taking on new duties.

State Sen. Jeb Bradley, a Republican from Wolfeboro, is sponsoring a bill to increase the powers of the joint health care reform oversight committee to include the state's newly-expanded Medicaid program. The bill would require the committee to provide oversight, policy direction and recommendations for legislation.

The Medicaid expansion plan ends in 2016 if lawmakers don't reauthorize it, and House Republicans are expected to try to modify it through legislation or the budget process. In the past, Republican members of the oversight committee have disagreed with Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan about the extent of its authority.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee holds a public hearing on the bill Thursday.
