Salem Police Department

Salem police are saying via Twitter that they have apprehended 18-year-old Thomas George.

Police had been searching for the suspect in an attempted homicide. The town's high school was placed under lockdown for a brief period Thursday morning.

Earlier in the morning, Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten identified the victim as George's mother, saying she was being taken to a Boston hospital. Her condition isn't known.

According to the Salem police Twitter account, George's vehicle was found abandoned in Derry. Schools in that town were also placed on a temporary lockdown.
