Serenity Place is a substance abuse recovery center in Manchester, offering detox programs and education to those struggling to overcome addiction. For Stephanie, Serenity Place provided a solid foundation for her recovery from drug and alcohol problems.

"My life was in shambles. I had lost my job, my daughter, my family. I was homeless," she says. Stephanie had participated in other detox and rehabilitation programs, but was ultimately unsuccessful, because, she says, she was only doing it to make her family happy.  "But you have to decide to do it for yourself. " This time she let go of her pride and opened herself up to significant change. "I became willing to let people tell me what I needed to do."

Serenity Place focuses not just on eliminating drugs and alcohol, but also on changing habits.  They helped Stephanie restructure her life. "It had shown me that I wasn't a bad person trying to get good," she says, "I was a sick person trying to get well."

Stephanie admits the gulf between learning coping skills and practicing them,  but the confidence she gained from her time at Serenity Place helped her make the transition back to an independent lifestyle. Now, she has her own place, a job, and has also rebuilt relationships with her family.

"My life is great now. Everything's not always perfect and not always the way I want it to be, but I have my family now, my daughter's in my life. I have goals. I can get through things," she says. "Serenity Place gave me the little push to do the things that I needed to do."
