Gov. Chris Sununu has come out in favor of the repeal of so-called “net neutrality” rules by the Federal Communications Commission, saying that “over regulation protects monopolies and hurts consumers.”
Last week, the FCC voted 3-2 to scrap Obama-era policies that prohibit internet providers from blocking sites or creating fast lanes on the internet. Supporters of the repeal argue that the move will enhance competition and eventually benefit customers.
“I am not convinced that a repeal of a rule that went into effect just two years ago is going to have the adverse impact that some are claiming,” writes Sununu in a statement. “In a free market, it is the consumers that will ultimately make choices that will incentivize companies to provide a better product.”
Critics of the repeal contend that without “net neutrality” rules in place, rural communities as well as small businesses could face higher hurdles to accessing high speed internet.
New Hampshire's all-Democratic congressional delegation is urging state Attorney General Gordon MacDonald to join other states in filing suit to stop the repeal. MacDonald’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
