Governor Chris Sununu said he was “incredibly disappointed” after Republican efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act came to a halt late Thursday night in Washington.
Whatever comes next, Sununu said governors and state legislatures have to have more of a say in the process.
"Right now, Washington is essentially in the healthcare business. My belief is, they've got to get out, they've got to let the implementers, those of us that are governors and on the front lines to implement these policies be a real part of that solution,” Sununu said Friday. “We've got to provide flexibility, we've got to provide funding, and you've got to provide the ability for governors and legislatures to create efficient systems that will save costs and provide better quality of care in the future."
Sununu opposed one of the versions of the repeal bill that had been floated in the last month, but said he still thinks major changes are needed to fix what he calls “a broken healthcare system.”
“I would have liked to have seen something done, I don't think it's the end of the road, though. We're going to keep providing good solutions,” Sununu said. “The governors have gotten together. We're going to keep putting ideas on the table, hopefully the Senate will take this up again in a constructive way and make sure that they're doing their job.”
