Teens Can Work Out For Free This Summer At N.H. Gym Chain

Gym chain Planet Fitness is allowing teenagers from age 15 to 18 to work out for free this summer at all of its New Hampshire gyms.

The goal, says Planet Fitness CEO Chris Rondeau, is to encourage teens to get fit and do so at a time of year when gyms tend to be less crowded.

"The facilities are open, they are open 24 hours a day," he said.

"The staff is here, lets see if we can introduce kids to fitness. You know I have some children myself, and you know they get out of school and what do they do all day? They are on their devices and they are on the couch, so lets get them active."

According to a recent survey of youth behavior, more than 14 percent of NH high schoolers are overweight; and 12 percent are obese.

I cover campaigns, elections, and government for NHPR. Stories that attract me often explore New Hampshire’s highly participatory political culture. I am interested in how ideologies – doctrinal and applied – shape our politics. I like to learn how voters make their decisions and explore how candidates and campaigns work to persuade them.
