A kayaking accident has taken a life in the North Country. NHPR's Chris Jensen reports.
A Vermont kayaker in his mid-20’s died Wednesday in an accident in the Franconia State Park, says Lincoln Police Chief Theodore Smith.
Smith said the man was kayaking with two companions on the West Branch of the Pemigewasset River.
The trio – described by Smith as experienced kayakers – were in a steep and narrow gorge near the Pine Sentinel Bridge.
Smith said people walking nearby saw one kayak hit a boulder.
“They saw the kayak go under and then the kayak apparently came up without him.”
Rescue units from Lincoln and Woodstock responded to the call, which came about 11 a.m.
Smith said the body was recovered downstream.
The accident did not occur on the main section of the Pemi River that is popular with tourists and kayakers looking for an easy and pleasant cruise.
The victim’s name is being withheld until his family can be notified.
In July a Hindsale kayaker drowned in the Connecticut River.
