Voters to Cast Ballots Tuesday in Special State Senate Election

Allegra Boverman for NHPR

Voters in New Hampshire’s 16th District will head to the polls Tuesday to choose a new state senator.

The seat opened up after the passing of Democratic Senator Scott McGillivray.

If you take a drive around the district, which includes Wards 1, 2, and 12 in Manchester and the towns of Dunbarton, Hooksett, Candia, and Bow, you can’t help but notice there’s an election coming up…campaign signs are everywhere.

But the biggest question is whether voters there will actually remember to cast a ballot on July 25th – given it’s a special election in the middle of the summer.

The three candidates in the race hope so. Those running are Republican David Boutin, who’s won the seat four times before; Democrat Kevin Cavanaugh, who’s a Manchester Alderman; and Libertarian Jason Dubrow, who’s new to politics.

No matter who wins Tuesday, the state Senate will remain in Republican control.
