Some Twitter users in New Hampshire felt special today. For them, #newhampshire was the number one trending topic on the social media platform. What followed was a mini tweet-storm of confusion.
“What is going on in New Hampshire for us to be trending?” Meghan Wilder tweeted on the Twitter, “Did something happen?”
For those of you who might not know – those with Twitter accounts can view a sidebar that lists popular or most tweeted-about stories – and this morning #newhampshire appeared at the top of the list.
“There is no need for New Hampshire to be trending. I just got up. Nothing is happening,” reported JJphoneman, possibly from the wrong side of the bed.
“I know why NH is trending on twitter!!!!!” Renee Vannata tweeted, “It's the beginning of New Hampshire Craft Beer Week!”
Writeyoufool suggested it might be because “we're getting 1-3" of snow later today. That's it.”
Some wondered if a tweet about the passing of Bill Farrand, the Wolfman at Clark’s Trading Post for almost 15 years, might have caused it.
Or what about the Dunkin Donuts in Bradford? How they just became the first in the state to drop the “Donut” - and just go by “Dunkin”…
Or…could it be the John Kasich visit earlier this week or maybe Martin O’Malley?
LuciaVon tweeted: “I love that the tweets causing New Hampshire to trend are residents wondering why in the world New Hampshire is trending.”
The truth, as it turns out, is a little more straightforward. If you’re a Twitter user and you live in New Hampshire, that #newhampshire hashtag in your trending sidebar was put there just for you. Live somewhere else and the No. 1 hot topic is, well, something else.
