Six pairs of piping plovers are nesting on the beaches of Hampton and Seabrook this summer. The birds are endangered in New Hampshire. For years, state Fish and Game officials have been trying to bring them back. This year, they’re roping off nesting areas and hiring volunteers to monitor the nests.

Brendan Clifford, a biological technician of the New Hampshire Fish and Game’s Wildlife Division, says the plovers have met with some obstacles.

Two-year-old Ben Bertini of Derry is reported to be recovering after suffering severe burns on 27 percent of  his body and a puncture wound to the arm when a stack of consumer fireworks suddenly ignited at his grandparents' Pelham home. He was put into a medically induced coma immediately following the accident last week. Monday, doctors removed the inhaler and he has been speaking. He is currently receiving skin grafts at the Shriners Hospital in Boston. Eight adults and five children were injured in the blast and subsequent fire.

A group home for people with HIV and Hepatitis C has settled its legal battle with the Town Of Gilsum. Under the terms of the settlement, AIDS Services of the Monadnock Region will be able to continue operating the Cleve Jones Wellness House.

The town had denied the facility a property tax exemption after receiving the necessary application several days late.

House Speaker William O’Brien barred reporters from the Concord Monitor from a state house press conference he called to discuss welfare abuse.

As reporters from about a half-dozen news outfits were welcomed to Speaker O’Brien’s office, reporters from the capital city’s only newspaper were blocked at the door by O’Brien spokesperson Shannon Bettencourt.

Gov. John Lynch has allowed a bill requiring photo identification at polling places to become law without his signature, but he says he hopes the New Hampshire Legislature will revisit the issue.
